It’s sad, but it’s becoming the norm; the police appear to have reached a dead end in yet another high profile murder investigation. This time around, investigators have been forced to release all the persons they had in custody for the brazen murder of one of their own, Corporal Romain Cleto.
Two Saturdays ago, the young cop was gunned down by an occupant of a suspicious car at the busy intersection of Regent Street and Avenue of the Republic, in the full view of persons waiting for transportation.
The cop was approaching the vehicle on foot when one of the occupants opened fire with what is believed to be an AK-47 assault rifle.
Corporal Cleto was buried with full military honours last Thursday, and to date, while the police boasted of arresting a prime suspect in the killing, they have no one in actual custody.
A few days after Cleto’s death, attorney at law Gordon Gilhuys had accompanied an Albouystown man, who police had indicated some interest in, to the Brickdam Police Station. That man along with another suspect was subsequently released, even as investigators continue their hunt for the alleged shooter.
Kaieteur News understands that the man police are now desperately seeking is well known to them, having survived a few execution attempts himself.
“He was positively identified,” said a senior police officer, who seemed very confident that the suspect would be apprehended.
A few months ago the suspect claimed he was shot at by police ranks which caused him to crash the car he was driving into a canal.
