A senior official at the Grove Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) yesterday revealed that the system of collecting tax in Kaneville, East Bank Demerara (EBD) is poor, hence there is no money to repair the deplorable roads in that community.
For years, residents have been forced to use the dreadful roads but now, the conditions of these have rapidly gotten worse.
Residents were earlier accusing the government of turning a blind eye on the
community because after numerous requests and letters to the newspapers, there was never a response from any government official until yesterday, when a public servant decided to break the silence.
The NDC official, who asked to remain unnamed, explained that due to the (NDC’s) financial status, they cannot afford to do anything to the roads in Kaneville. He added that the council does not have the required equipment to do any work.
When asked why the NDC waited until now to look into the matter, he explained that the council had previously run into some financial difficulties, and with the conditions the roads are in presently, if they decided to do something with the little cash that they have, the money will quickly finish and it wouldn’t make a difference on the roads.
“The condition is beyond our capability, we cannot touch it. The minute we try it’s going to drain our finances and you wouldn’t see any progress. Right now we are trying to patch up the potholes in Diamond New Scheme (also on the EBD),” the official stated.
He said that they have requested assistance from the Ministry of Local Government but yesterday when this publication contacted Minister Ganga Persaud, he explained that they can work on what is passed in the budget and nothing was mentioned for Kaneville.
This publication understands that the NDC has gotten approval to purchase a mini excavator, “right now it’s at tender board and once we get it, we will be able to do something on the roads in Kaneville,” the NDC official stated.
Meanwhile, during a recent visit to that community, Kaieteur News observed that there was not a single “good” road. With great difficulty, this publication was only able to visit one of the almost impassable streets within that area.
One driver who gave his name as Kevin said “look at this road, there is no good road in here. This is what we have to drive through every day”.
“When the rain fall, water does full up in all them holes and it does look like a trench. Not only that… some of them cars that working in here don’t want go in certain streets, so in the nights when I’m working late I have to stay by my relatives in Grove,” a resident, Sunita Budhoo, lamented.
