Several major initiatives were discussed while several coaches were tasked with varying responsibilities to ensure the implementation of those initiatives when newly appointed President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), Christopher Mathias, met with members of the Guyana Football Coaches Association (GFCA) at the GFF Section K Campbellville office, Saturday morning last. Vice Presidents (GFF), Ivan Persaud and Rawleston Adams were also in attendance as were Committee Members Vanessa Dickenson and Keith O’Jeer.
Several pertinent issues were discussed as the newly elected executives attempt to foster and consolidate an amicable relationship among its affiliates towards the betterment of the sport. The coaches’ role in the developmental scheme was among the issues that took center stage and coming out of those discussions it was agreed that the establishment of a secretariat should take precedence over the many other issues. Towards this end, the coaches requested assistance from the GFF hierarchy for the establishment of a Secretariat to conduct their business in a controlled and structured environment.
Mr. Mathias responded in the affirmative but issued a charge to the coaches to develop a national, technical and tactical development programme to support the authenticity of their request. The coaches were also asked to submit a document detailing the cost of the project. Coach of the Fruta Conquerors FC and Chairman of the GFCA, Sampson Gilbert said that his colleagues are still to identify a location for the office but assured Kaieteur Sport that they will work ardently to put the modalities in place to bring the project to fruition.
Furthermore, Mr. Gilbert will team up with President of the GFCA, Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover to conduct visits to the various sub associations and facilitate the expansion of the membership in the respective territories, while encouraging coaches in these areas to work under the umbrella of the GFCA. They have been asked to complete this task within a 2 weeks period. Another committee has also been enacted to put the modalities in place for the implementation of a National Development Programme. Among its members are Lyndon France, Joseph Wilson and Denzil Thompson. Currently, 25 registered coaches comprise the GFCA and the outreach initiative is scheduled to get underway soon.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mathias acknowledged the importance of the coaches in the structure and disclosed that his executives are in the process of restructuring the game in Georgetown. He said that they are currently assessing the situation to ascertain the needs of the clubs and schools. The GFF boss said that he hopes to incorporate the efforts of the wider community, government, businesses and other important stakeholders. “Coaches are teachers and should be able to offer advice on the intricacies of the sport so as to conform to the national, technical and tactical developmental plan,” concluded Mr. Mathias.
The GFCA has been dormant for some time and was resuscitated in September 2011 when an Interim Committee was tasked with running its affairs while being mandated to examine the constitution with an aim of restoration as a functional entity under the GFF. Mr. Dover was subsequently elected as President and the other executive members are Brian Joseph (Vice President), Sheron Abrams (Treasurer), Jevon Rodrigues (Committee member) and Sampson Gilbert (Secretary). Kirk Douglas has been appointed as the Assistant secretary Treasurer.
