Veteran cyclist Robin Persaud powered his way to an exciting win over rival Alanzo Greaves to win the 2nd annual Powerade 50-mile cycle Road Race sponsored by beverage giants, Banks DIH and held on Sunday last on the West Demerara.
The Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club member crossed the finish line at the Demerara Harbour Bridge in One Hour 56 Minutes 08 Seconds in a race that attracted 40 starters, pedaling off from the Wales Police Station, West Bank Demerara and proceeded to Bushy Park on the Eats Bank Essequibo before returning to the finish line.
Soon after the riders were sent ion their way, eight riders broke away from the main pack; Persaud, Greaves, last year’s winner Jude Bentley, Andrew Reece, Albert Philander, Raymond Newton, Akeem Wilkinson and Andre Abdool.
They chasing pack tried their best to narrow the lead and connect but they were not able to do so. In the sprint home, Persaud prevailed over Greaves with Philander, Reece, Sankar and Newton rounding out the top six places.
Despite not placing in the top six, he carted off 5 of 8 sprint prizes, Persaud, Reece and Eric Sankar taking one each.
The top junior rider on the day was Marlon King followed by Alanso Ambrose Kravitz Jeffrey in that order. However, Jeffrey was disqualified from the race after it was ascertained that he was motor pacing behind a scooter, contrary to the rules of the race.
Andre Abdool was then promoted to the third place in the junior category. Keon Thomas was first in the Mountain Bike category with Richard Charles and Ray Raul second and third respectively.
Winning the veteran division was Ralph Williams ahead of Kennard Lovell and Talim Shaw in that order.
Communications Manager of Banks DIH Ltd., Troy Peters assisted in handing over the prizes to the winners and top performers while complimenting them for making the event another success.
Peters stated that Banks will be on board again next year.
Riders are using these races as preparations for this year’s Independence 3-stage road race set for May 17 and 18 covering a distance of 171.5 miles. Defending champion is Team Coco’s Ivan Dominguez who covered the three stages in Six 44 Minutes 54 Seconds.
