Explosive female sprinter, Under-17 CARIFTA Games 200m bronze medalist, Tirana Mitchell easily compensated for her disappointment of missing the 100m race on Saturday with an easy win against her rival, Jevina Sampson in the 200m yesterday.
Mitchell blazed 24.4 seconds to win ahead of Sampson, who posted 25.4 seconds and CARIFTA team-mate, Avon Samuels (25.6) in the Under-18 Girls’ race on the second day of the Wartsila-sponsored National Youth and Junior Championships at the Police Sports Club Ground.
Tevin Garraway, who reportedly had not trained since last November, won the 200m Boys’ U-18 race ahead of 2013 400m CARIFTA bronze medalist, Jason Yaw. Garraway showed his class in the race with a commanding win after an excellent start.
He turned in 21.8 seconds and Yaw finished with a time of 22.2 seconds. Dequan Vancooten was third with a time of 22.6s. Kevin Abbensetts completed a double-sprint haul with a 200m win that followed his 100m triumph on the first day.
Abbensetts won in a time of 22.2 seconds, while Samuel Doris ran 22.7s for second and Selwyn Foster 22.8s for third.
Again the female U-20 sprint category was a disappointment after the 200m race failed to occur. It followed the pattern of the U-20 Girls’ 100m the day before.
Ornesto Thomas won the 800m Boys’ U-18 race comfortably, clocking a time of 2:02.7 seconds with Quacey Winter (2:17.4) second. Rondel Alesten won the male U-20 version in 2:10.7. Both races were combined.
Lotavia Moore won the 800m Girls U-18 race in a time of 2:46.0 while Dominique Angoy and Kenesha Stephenson was second and third with times of 2:52.9 and 3:10.0 respectively. Adama Roberts won the U-20 race, which was also combined.
Joel Thom, with a leap of 12.65m, won the U-18 Boys triple jump, while Clarence Greene won the U-20 event with a leap of 12.61m. Greene with a throw of 33.92m took home the Discus as Yoel Benjamin was second with 33.20m and Andre Williams third with 28.69m.
Running Brave Athletic Club won both the male and female 4x400m events. The senior athletes will have their time on the track at the National Senior Championships on Sunday at the Base Camp Ayangana Ground.
