By Zaheer Mohamed
Demerara defeated Berbice 91 runs to capture the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)\Limacol Inter County U-15 Cup yesterday at the Georgetown Cricket Club Ground, Bourda.
Set 202 to win from a minimum of 56 overs, Berbice were routed for 111 in 52.2 overs on the second and final day. Openers Adrian Sukwah and Matthew Hardial set Berbice on course with an opening stand of 31, but the dismissal of Hardial who was caught off Sagar Hatharamani for 20 triggered a collapse which saw the Berbicians being bowled out just before the close of play. Sukwah top scored with 54 (5×4) as Ronaldo Mohamed snared 3-17, while Hatharamani captured 3-28 and Kelvin Shewpersaud 2-25.
Earlier, Demerara with a first innings lead of 75, resumed on their overnight second innings score of 35 without loss and managed 161-8 off their allocation of 56 overs. Bhaskar Yadram led with 71 (3×4); Joshua Harrichand grabbed 4-48.
Scores: Berbice 118-8 in 38 overs and 111 all out in 52.2 overs; lost to Demerara 151-6 in 38 overs and 161-8 in 56 overs.
At Demerara Cricket Club, the President’s XI overcame Essequibo by 216 runs. Resuming the day on the second innings total of 26 without loss the President’s XI declared minutes before lunch on 134-9 in 45 overs. Openers Raymond Perez 35 (2×4) and Darshan Persaud 16 took their partnership to 53 before Persaud was stumped off Sachin Persaud. Zameer Inshan with 23(2×4,1×6) and Andrew Clifford 19 (2×4) were the only other batsmen that offered resistance as Persaud ended with 5-42 from 16 overs and the talented Beesham Moses, who bowled with good variation, captured 4-44 from 15 overs to end with match figures of 8-93.
Set 256 for victory from a minimum of 63 overs, Essequibo were skittled for 38 in 21 overs. Randy Rooplall (10) was the only batsman that made it into double figures. Off spinner Richie Looknauth picked up 5-19 off 10.5 overs, while Darshan Persaud took 2-9 from 3 overs. Moses and Looknauth were named joint man-of-the-match. However, the lack of inter association cricket in Essequibo may very well contribute to the county’s below par performance in this tournament.
Scores: President’s XI 156-5 in 38 overs and 134-9 dec. in 56 overs; beat Essequibo 85-8 in 38 overs and 38 all out in 21 overs.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, President of the GCB Drubahadur thanked the sponsors and said he looked forward to their continued support, while Director of Sport Neil Kumar urged the players to take the game seriously. Marketing manager of the New GPC Trevor Basoo said he was impressed with way the tournament was organized and congratulated the GCB for doing a fine job.
