Fifty-year-old Percival Duncan of Shopping Plaza, South Ruimveldt, appeared yesterday before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge of unlawful assault against his common law wife, Sharon Wickham.
Prosecutor Jumo Nichols read the facts of the report which stated that, on April 8, the complainant told the defendant that she was going on a boat cruise. Duncan, who has a reported history of domestic violence against him, then instructed her to take their nine-year-old child along for the trip.
Wickham refused and the defendant became annoyed. He accused her of making plans to meet with another man. A fight resulted and the defendant “served his wife several head butts”. She made an effort to avoid the butting by scratching him on his face and he further dealt her several blows to the stomach. The matter was reported, and the assailant was arrested and charged for the said offence.
The defendant explained that he did indeed hit the woman but it was a “little scuffle” they had due to a misunderstanding and he was gravely sorry for the wrongdoing that occurred.
When asked for her remarks on the matter, the complainant expressed to the court “Your worship this man is a dangerous man. He always threatening me and beating me and telling me how he gun murder me. He always thinking I got some other man and I don’t have another man.”
When the defendant’s statements along with the evidence provided in court were taken into consideration, Duncan was subsequently sentenced to six months imprisonment.
