Georgetown has opted for what it believes is its strongest composition when the final twelve players who will battle Linden Saturday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall were identified for the huge grudge contest against long-time foes.
Defensive and offensive point guard, Travis Burnett will spearhead the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Mackeson and New Palm Court-sponsored 2013 Georgetown season-opening showdown.
Burnett was one of three players from the number two ranked Pacesetters that made the final cut; the others are national forward, Royston Siland and shooting guard, Stephon Gillis.
Because of the depth of talent is possesses and the necessity of particular roles, Ravens secured five spots on the Georgetown team. The number one ranked Ravens was extremely impressive in the last three months, winning three consecutive titles.
Guard/forward, Akeem Kanhai was named among forwards Ryan Gullen, Tyrone Hamid, and guards Rodwell Fortune and Stephon Henry.
No reason was given for the non-selection of impressive forward, Jermaine Slater, who had an outstanding season last year. Guard, Ryan Stephney also did not make the cut, giving way to a youthful guard, Marlon Chesney from Plaisance Guardians.
Republic Bank Nets’ guard, Hodayah Stewart; Colts’ scoring sensation, Shelroy Thomas and the Pepsi Sonics’ Jason Squires were the other players who will represent Georgetown in what could easily become one of the best basketball clashes.
Georgetown has clearly moved away from the norm of expressing confidence in veteran players with their selection of a youthful and nippy team. Siland has his work cut out in the bottom with the non-selection of a backup forward, who can also play at centre.
The move was a sign of limited rest time for Siland. His fitness will certainly be tested among an impressive line-up of guards and small forwards. Ravens’ Darcel Harris and Pacesetters’ Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan will coach the team Saturday night.
