The recent upsurge of boxing gyms in the Ancient County of Berbice has witnessed a multitude of youngsters that are performing above par and coach of the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG), one of the more established institutions in Berbice, joins with a former pugilist, overseas based Guyanese, Mark Thom, to stage the 6th Inter Gym Boxing tournament at the poolside of the Fountain Pool Guest House, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Saturday, March 2 next.
The one night programme will feature the Simon Pures out of the Ancient County from the PRBG and the Rose Hall Jammers (RHJ) competing against their counterparts from three Georgetown based gyms, Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Harpy Eagles (HE) and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
Mr. Thom is a former amateur boxer now residing in the USA. He said that he has always had the interests of the youths in Berbice as paramount and he has been contributing to the success of the tournament ever since its inauguration 6 years ago. He said that Berbice has always produced top class boxers and he wished to see pugilists from that region resort to the olden days when the likes of Ramesh Bess and Al Thomas among others ruled the roost.
Several top amateurs will comprise the card including Joel Williamson (PRBG), Tyronne Lashley (RHJ) and Jamal Eastman. Two professional boxers, Gladwyn Dorway and Dereck Richmond are also expected to take the ring in an exhibition match.
The tournament has received corporate support from several business entities on Berbice including Banks DIH Ltd, DSL, Homestyle Kitchen, Stretch the Dollar, Republic Bank, Kanhai Electrical and La Carib Diner.
