Cyclists will again take to the country’s road ways on Sunday when the 22nd R&R International 40-mile road race is staged, pedaling off at 09:00hrs.
The season this year has pedaled off at a furious pace with a number of events on the West Demerara, National Park, East Coast Highway and the Seawall Band Stand Circuit and the pace is set to increase so riders must be in a high level of physical and mental fitness in order to survive.
Sunday’s event will be used as necessary warm up ahead of the 16th Cheddi Jagan Memorial road race which will be contested in the Ancient County of Berbice on March 3.
Robin Persaud, who won last year’s edition of the R&R West Demerara race, will be in for a torrid time in trying to successfully defend the title given the kind of form Alonzo Greaves has shown so far (4 wins).
The young brigade of Raul Leal, Raynauth Jeffrey, Akeem Williams and Hamza Eastman among others will also be aiming to further stamp their authority in the junior category apart from the regular seniors, the likes of Geron Williams, Paul DeNobrega, Paul Chow-wee-nam, Orville Hinds, Rastaff O’Selmo, Eric Sankar, Junior Niles, Raymond Newton, Marlon King and others.
Sunday’s event will commence at the Demerara Harbour Bridge, proceed to Bushy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo before returning to the point of origin for the finish.
According to national Coach and organiser of the race Hassan Mohamed, the event is an open affair.
Last year’s winning time as posted by Robin Persaud was One Hour 45 Minutes 16 Seconds, however, the last race held on the same circuit a few weeks ago, for Mashramani and sponsored by the National Sports Commission; Warren Mc Kay posted One Hour 40 Minutes 36 Seconds in topping the field.
Sunday’s showdown promises to be exciting and can even see a lower time being posted. Veteran winner last year, Talim Shaw, will be under pressure to replicate that performance but only time will tell.
Sponsor of the race is former cyclist and Managing Director of R&R International, Jacob Rambarran, who is expected to be on hand to show appreciation to the cyclists by presenting the incentives.
Meanwhile, the 16th annual Cheddi Jagan Memorial event is sponsored by BK International. It will start at New Amsterdam at 09:00 hours on Sunday March 3, proceed to Number 55 Village on the Corentyne before returning for the conclusion at Port Mourant.
