The Guyana Football Federation 2012/2013 Super League restarted on Sunday last with Milerock rocking their way to a 2-0 win over Buxton United Sports club in the feature game of a double header at the BV Community Centre Ground, East Coast Demerara.
The win for the Linden side took them off the bottom of the table with the 3 points taking them to 7, Buxton remain on 11.
In the curtain raiser at the same venue, Den Amstel Porknockers rallied to earn an equal share of the points drawing with home team BV Triumph United, 1-1.
Over at the Uitvlugt Community Centre Ground, the home team, Uitvlugt Warriors and Rosignol United battled to a 0-0 stalemate.
Buxton United went into the Milerock battle as pre-game favourites but Milerock had other ideas as they sought to improve their position from being bottom of the table. The opening exchanges were even but as the game progressed, the Linden boys came into their own.
Both teams boast’s a number of promising young players and they were not afraid to take to fight to each other, something which the fans absorbed with appreciation.
Going with the steady Atlantic breeze on a sunny afternoon, the opening 45 minutes did not produce any goals as both teams were able to keep each other at bay. Following the resumption after the half, it did not take very long for the deadlock to be broken.
Joel McKinnon it was who broke the deadlock with a 51st minute strike, a goal that brought smiles to the faces of his teammates and Technical staff.
The issue was put beyond the shadow of a doubt in the 72nd minute, compliments of a Clarence Higgins goal. Try as they did, Buxton were not able to find the back of the nets and Milerock were not prepared to entertain sharing the spoils as they took the full quota available for the win.
The opening game saw BV Triumph United taking the lead very early, their leading striker Delroy Deen with a powerful left foot shot in the 4th minute put them ahead. Den Amstel looked somewhat ring rusty but still held their own. BV created opportunities but lacked the killer instinct in the attacking third, their lack of driving home the advantage would come back to haunt them later on. Den Amstel, another side that showcases a number of young talented players, kept on pressing and were rewarded with the equalizing goal in the 44th minute, Rodwell Hutson rocking the back of the nets.
The results of last Sunday leaves the Super League interestingly poised with another double header set for the GFC Ground tomorrow evening (Wednesday) from 18:00hrs. Defending champions Alpha United will open against Upper Demerara’s Amelia’s Ward United with the main event bringing together Western Tigers and Pele. Three more matches will be played on Sunday.
The Uitvlugt Community Centre Ground will host a double header from 13:30hrs with Den Amstel Porknockers taking on Amelia’s Ward United followed by Uitvlugt Warriors against BV Triumph United. Up at the Blairmont Community Centre Ground, Rosignol United will oppose Alpha United.
