2012 has been a bittersweet year for many sports personalities with some achieving phenomenal results while others rued missed opportunities and aspiring to enact the requisite changes to enhance their fortunes this year.
The selectors will soon huddle to examine the respective nominations for the prestigious sports accolades and while the list may present some challenges, the executive of the Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) believe that their charge, Priyanna Ramdhani, has done enough to be adjudged Junior Sportswoman of the Year.
President of the GBA, Gokarn Ramdhani, feels that though she is merely 10 years old, Priyanna, also a table tennis player and 2011 Junior Sportswoman of the Year, has been outstanding in both disciplines and has been consistent in her achievements. “She has been outstanding throughout the year and dominated the U-11, 13 & 15 badminton events locally while emulating her local performances on the international scene in the U-11 & 13 events,” revealed Mr. Ramdhani.
The multi talented sportswoman had also performed creditably in table-tennis. Ramdhani had journeyed to the Alberta, Canada in July last year to participate in the Junior Pan American Championships and won two bronze in doubles and mixed doubles and silver in the singles consolation round. Fourteen countries had participated, but Ramdhani’s medals had distinguished her country which was the only Caribbean country that medaled at that tournament. She also replicated her performance when she travelled to the Dominican Republic in August last year and competed in the Caribbean Badminton Championships; she won two gold in singles and doubles respectively and silver in mixed doubles. These achievements can be added to many others which the GBA President feels can tip the scales in favour of his charge.
As if her achievements with the badminton racquet were not enough, the dual talented Priyanna also outshone her counterparts in the table-tennis arena which started from February last year; she clinched a gold medal in the National Inter-School Table Tennis Championships (10 & Under) while securing 2nd place in the NSC Annual Mashramani Table Tennis Tournament and 3rd in the National Inter-School Table Tennis Championships, both in the 10 and under category.
She has achieved much in badminton throughout the year despite a few setbacks including gold medals in several categories of the National Sports Commission Junior tournament in February, the GBA Junior Easter Tournament in March and the tournament between the Marian Academy and Queens College Secondary school in April.
She also enjoyed some success during international tournaments in Canada, in the XXI Pan American Championships (silver in the U-11 singles; bronze in the U-11 doubles and bronze also in the U-11 mix doubles).
Ms Ramdhani currently attends Marian Academy and is preparing for Secondary School Entrance Examination later this year but still finds time to engage in rigid training sessions. She visits the Yonex Badminton Club at least thrice weekly while she hones her skills in table tennis at Marian Academy two days of the week.
Mr. Ramdhani is confident that when everything is taken into consideration, his charge stands a great chance of procuring the coveted Junior Sportswoman of the year accolade.
