The Guyana National Rifle Association held its Annual General Meeting on Thursday January 31, 2013 at the Bank of Guyana Roof Garden. The AGM saw a very large attendance, the best in years according to the Hon Secretary, Mr. Ryan Sampson.
At the Elections, Commodore Gary Best was return as President of the Association, unopposed. The two Vice Presidents being returned were Mr. Richard B. Fields S. C. and ACP (ret’d) Paul Slowe. Mr. Ryan Sampson was returned as the Honorary Secretary and Lt Col. Terrence Stuart as the Treasurer, both were unopposed. The Assistant Secretary/Treasurer remains Mr. Hemant Narine with the other proposed nominee being Ms. Vidushi Persaud. Fullbore Captain Mahendra Persaud and Vice Captain Dylan Fields were unopposed. The new Smallbore Captain is Dale Hing with Gordon Richards being returned as Smallbore Vice Captain.
There are two new Committee Members being Lennox Braithwaite and Dr. Johan DaSilva with Mohamed Qualander retaining his Committee position.
There were four nominations for the position of auditors with Ray Beharry retaining his position and Ransford Goodluck being elected as the second auditor.
The PRO for the Guyana NRA will be appointed next Wednesday at the first Statutory Meeting. It is strongly felt that current PRO Troy Peters will be unopposed in this position.
Reports from the AGM will be sent to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the National Sport Commission and the Guyana Olympic Association as part of reporting to these bodies. The Minister of Sport has always maintained that the Guyana NRA is one of the better run Associations.
Meanwhile, there were reports given by the Honorary Secretary, Treasurer, Fullbore and Smallbore Captains. The comprehensive report given by the Honorary Secretary highlighted the activities of the Association: the high point being the hosting of the West Indies Fullbore Shooting Champions in October 2012 which entailed the upgrading of the Timehri Rifle and Pistol Ranges to international standard.
This preparation was a collaborative effort with the Guyana Defense Force, thanks to Commodore Gary Best. The competitors from the visiting territories commended the Association for a well ran championship.
The Guyana NRA also created history by having its Paton, His Excellency President Donald Ramotar, firing the ceremonial opening shot. This was a first in the West Indies.
The National Fullbore Team won both team championships and its Guyanese marksmen finished in the first four positions with Mr. Lennox Braithwaite taking the top gun position and most of the individual prizes. The smallbore team also attended three international shoots in Barbados and Trinidad with creditable performances.
In terms of Fund Raisers, a Mash Bar was held and also a Take-Away BBQ and Lime.
This together with donations from the business community assisted in the Teams representing Guyana and hosting championships.
The Treasurer reported on the positive financial standing of the Association as we were able to pay all our debts and retain a positive bank balance.
Plans for 2013 includes further upgrades to the Timehri Ranges, improving the competitiveness of the smallbore shooters, hosting at least three fund raising activities, hosting the Great Britain Rifle Team in April 2013 and attracting new members.
The AGM agreed on a new motion to be added to the Rules of Smallbore Shooting to its Constitution.
