Toolsie Persaud Limited has now resorted to rationing stone to its customers; as Guyana seems to be experiencing shortages of this key building material.
When contacted, places like Gafoor and BK International were all out of stones. This situation has resulted in Toolsie Persaud Limited coming under pressure from those meeting deadlines.
This has resulted in a scene being created in front of the Stone Department of the Toolsie Persaud Limited’s location in Providence.
There were people who felt that the company was being unfair to them, as only “certain persons” were supplied with stones.
However, it was later explained to this publication by an official at Toolsie Persaud Limited, that the stones had to be “rationed” in such a way that everybody gets some. Especially those who rely on the material to get work which will in turn provide for their families.
There were several trucks parked in the compound awaiting an uncertain load of stone. Some of the drivers noted that they had parked their trucks in the company’s yard since the night before (Tuesday night), hoping that they would get a load of stones. As of yesterday afternoon, many of the trucks were still empty.
This publication understands that those who were now starting to build, and those who had small jobs to complete, were turned away while persons in the process of building their homes and those with major deadlines to meet were given preference.
When contacted last evening, Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Robert Persaud, said that he would be able to give a definite answer on whether or not there is indeed a shortage in the material only after he would have had a look at the production report. He has promised to do so sometime today.
