Defending champion, Vasco defeated Silvertown All Stars 5-2 when the Guyana Beach Football Association (GBFA) 2013 Coca-Cola Cup League commenced at the Bayroc Community Centre Ground, Saturday January 12 last.
Ameer Allicock netted thrice with support from Mervin Sobers and Michael Wilson who scored one apiece for the winners. Mark Hope and Jamal Haynes narrowed the score but it was just not enough to earn Silvertown All Stars the victory.
Game two saw Cool Runnings defeating Winners 11-2 with Sean Brewley (5), Ron Fiedtkou (4) with Marlon Benjamin and Rawle Gittens netting one each for the winners. In the third game, Blueberry Hill defeated Alikyu SC, 3-0 on the back of goals from Troy Miller (2) and Keith Gilkes (1).
Other winners were Eagles United over Netrockers 5-4 after Allan Halley had registered a hat-trick with support from Derron Smith, who scored a double. Shattas FC then gained a walkover from Timehri Panthers in Sunday’s lone game.
Meanwhile, the teams were involved in a march pass where Banks DIH Outdoor Events Manager, Mortimer Stewart took the salute. GFF representative, Cindy Saigon and Rollin Tappin of the GBFA also comprised a part of the group on the dais.
Delivering remarks shortly afterwards, Stewart extended New Year’s greetings to the players while endorsing his company’s commitment to the development of the sport. Ms Saigon pledged the continued support of the Guyana Football Federation even as she wished the players well.
Mr. Tappin cited beach football as another important development for local sports and urged participants to work hard in the acquisition of rules and other intricacies of the game. He conveyed deep gratitude to Banks DIH Ltd for its support even as he informed that Guyana is poised to enter the qualifying race for the Beach World Cup competition for the first time. He said that the GBFA will soon identify a 25 member training squad for this engagement.
