A 22-year-old Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) worker was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) yesterday, minutes after he was involved in an accident on the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
Dead is Lemuel Ogle of 27 Middle Street, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara. The accident occurred around 13:20 hrs.
According to reports, it was raining heavily at the time and Ogle, who was heading east along the Harbour Bridge on a motorcycle, skidded and collided with a car heading in the opposite direction.
The driver of the car immediately assisted in taking the injured man to the GPHC, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Yesterday at the hospital, Ogle’s sister, Liana, said she was in Georgetown when she received a phone call from her mother, informing her that her brother was involved in an accident and was at the Georgetown Hospital.
“When I reach the hospital, they told me that they want to speak with someone older, so I called my sister and when she reached here, then they told us that my brother was involved in an accident and he died,” a tearful Liana Ogle recounted.
The grieving woman added that she could have hardly recognized her brother, “his foot was badly injured, his chest gash open and he was all bloody.”
She said she last spoke to her brother the morning before the accident. Lemuel Ogle was reportedly heading to his brother’s home in Georgetown when the accident occurred.
Ogle was on leave and was scheduled to resume duty last night. Police in a press release said that they are investigating the accident. The driver is assisting with investigations.
