Amateur boxers received a major boost when the American Ambassador, Brendt Hardt, visited the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym Monday evening last and donated a substantial amount of gears for their development.
Heartened by the show of chivalry, the young pugilists will obviously turn in their best performances when the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) stages its national Senior Boxing Championships tonight and tomorrow night at the Banks DIH Car Park, Thirst Park.
GABA officials have indicated that tonight’s tournament will be the last for the year and boxers the likes of bantamweight Imran Khan, Novice and Intermediate welterweight champion, Eon Bancroft, middleweight Dennis Thomas and Lightweight Stefan Gouveia will all be on show. The latter three pugilists have distinguished themselves among their Caribbean counterparts when they opposed boxers from Trinidad and Tobago on the November edition of Guyana Fight Night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
Otherwise boxers of several other top gyms will vie for honours including those from Harpy Eagles (HE), GDF, Guyana Police Force (GPF), Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) Rosehall Jammers, Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym, Five Star Boxing Gym (5SBG) and Andrew Lewis boxing gym among others. Punching time is 19:00hrs sharp.
