A group of concerned women took to the streets of Linden on Tuesday to protest the recent spate of police killings of young men in Linden and Georgetown.
Led by Region Ten Member of Parliament, Vanessa Kissoon, the women, who had assembled at the Mackenzie end of the Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge, marched down Casaurina Drive and the Washer Pond Road, despite a sudden heavy downpour, which drenched them thoroughly.
The march culminated at the Regional Democratic Council office, where Kissoon later had a meeting with Regional Chairman Sharma Solomon.
Speaking with members of the media, Kissoon, who initiated the march, said that it was time that people stood up and spoke out against such brutality by the police force.
“If you look at the age range of these young men that the police are killing it’s between the age range of 15 and 25, and this is our future. So we need better police reforms; we need police officers that are better trained.”
Alluding to the July 18 shooting to death of three Lindeners by police, Kissoon emphasized that police ought to be better trained in crowd control.
The Member of Parliament also made reference to the young men who were recently shot dead by police in Georgetown, including Dameon Belgrave, who was killed by a stray bullet while socializing with friends, on the eve of his birthday, and Shaquille Grant who was his mother’s only son.
“We decided to come out here today because it could have been any one of us here, or any one of our sons. So this is how we are going to send the message against these atrocities, and we need other people from all the other Regions and organizations to come out and support this cause across the country.
“We need the “Mothers in Black’, “Red Thread” and all such organizations to come out because we want to make this a national call, where all the regions are represented, all the mothers, so come out in black, and come out against police brutality in this country. Guyana needs to speak out.
“You don’t know who is next because these young men were not criminals; they hadn’t committed any crime- weren’t out of prison. These were innocent young men going about their daily business.”
