Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday ordered a probation report to be made on Savitri Ramnauth, pending sentence. Ramnauth, a former Survival Supermarket cashier was charged for stealing $198,342 from her previous employer.
Ramnauth had initially pleaded not guilty to the offence and was placed on $85,000 bail by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton. However yesterday she decided to change her plea to guilty.
The incident allegedly took place on May 22 while Ramnauth was on duty at the supermarket; the money went missing from the cash register to which she was assigned. She was unable to account for the aforementioned sum of money. The police were called in and an investigation launched. The woman was subsequently arrested. Ramnauth was later brought before the court for the stolen cash. She is to be sentenced on October 12.
