Berbice High School, Berbice Educational Institute surge ahead
Kerron McKenzie scored a hat-trick to lead Berbice High School (BHS) to a 3-0 victory over Canje Secondary School (CSS), while Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) and Vryman’s Erven Secondary (VESS) battled to a 1-1 stalemate when play in the inaugural Wilbur Hope Memorial Inter Secondary School football tournament got underway at the All Saints Scot Church Ground, Monday afternoon last.
Kerron McKenzie scored all of the goals for BHS in the 15th, 26th and 45th minutes, while Gary Solomon scored for BEI from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute. Kevin Liddell then brought the situation back to equilibrium for Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS) with a 58th minute stinger.
Meanwhile, sponsor of the tournament, Kevin ‘Kevy’ Henry said that Wilbur Hope, a former resident of New Amsterdam in whose memory the tournament is staged, was a mentor for many youngsters in Berbice. Henry a former resident of New Amsterdam who participated in football, cricket and athletics among other disciplines, confessed that he always wanted to reciprocate for the generosity demonstrated by the late Hope. Now a serving member of the US Army, Henry said that Hope was an inspiration to him and other young footballers in New Amsterdam during his tenure in the sport.
“Mr. Hope would always share his experiences with us and when we are liming on the streets he would encourage us to get involved in productive activities like sports and or community related projects,” said Mr. Henry. He said that he was touched by the late community icon whose input into the lives of many youngsters in the Berbice area remains indelible.
Last year marked the 10th year since Mr. Hope passed on and at those activities Hope’s relatives had constructed a pavilion on the Tucber Park playfield in honour of his 10th death anniversary. This year, participating schools received jerseys, trunks and footballs during the launching ceremony staged at the All Saints Scots Church ground Saturday afternoon last.
Activities continue today with two more matches. In the first, BHS tackle Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS), while New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary (NAMS) oppose BEI in the main feature. The Hearts of Oak Masters are also assisting with the coordination of the competition.
