Raquayyah Boyer was on Saturday evening crowned Miss Guyana Universe 2012 at the poolside of the Princess International Hotel at Providence after what many described as one of the worst pageants within recent years.
The 20-year-old, who stands five feet, nine inches tall, will represent Guyana at the Miss Universe 2012 pageant to be held later this year after turning back the challenge of 10 other delegates.
The announcement of the winner was greeted with a lukewarm applause and much bickering, betraying the division in the audience as to who should have one.
Boyer’s platform for the Miss Guyana Universe 2012 pageant was ‘Domestic violence’. She explained that the issue has become an epidemic in the Guyanese society, and every day dawns the possibility of another victim.
This is the second attempt at a major national title for Boyer.
The new Miss Guyana Universe 2012 had won the Miss Linden Town Week Pageant in 2010, but failed to place in the Miss Guyana World 2011 pageant.
Meanwhile, the position of first runner-up went to crowd favourite, Berbician, Nikita Barker, who was graceful from the beginning of event, but fumbled during the final question. She also copped the top accolades for Miss ‘Body Beautiful’ and ‘Best Smile’.
The other top five contestants were Fayedha King, fourth runner-up; Nakeshia Alexander third runner-up and Sadhna Yunus second runner-up.
Another Lindener, Eumani Bourne was adjudged ‘Miss Congeniality.’

Reigning Miss Universe 2011, Angola’s Leila Lopes also graced the event as part of an official four-day visit leading up to the crowning of Miss Guyana Universe 2012.
President Donald Ramotar, his family and Minister of Education Priya Manickchand were also present throughout the pageant.
If one were to judge this year’s contest, which includes all the ceremonies, it can only be described as poorly choreographed.
There seems to be either very little or absolutely no proper rehearsals for a pageant of this magnitude.
Organizer of the pageant, Odinga Lumumba was not even aware of which country the reigning Miss Universe is from. During his speech, he continuously referred to the Angolan beauty as “Miss Mongolia”.
And moving on to the night’s entertainment, it was a nightmare. Had it not been for the Trinidadian talent Kes, patrons would not have had any actual fun.
There was also a fashion show which featured designs by Sonia Noel.
Coming back to the actual pageant, it started an hour late, but that was no surprise.
The delegates were all adorned in hot red two piece swimsuits. This segment clearly showed that make-up can only do so much to remedy flaws.
Nonetheless, the evening wear segment was amazing. The designs of all the dresses were beautiful, a plus for the designers.
One of the designers was actually contestant Drusilla Johnson; who designed a beautiful off-the -shoulder black dress, which she accessorized simply with a red flower in her hair and a pair of red heels.
Sadhna Yunus, the Second Runner-up, was adorned in a spectacular white and silver dress designed by Randy Madray.
Miss Congeniality, Eumani Bourne also wore a beautiful dress.
At the end of the pageant, Miss Guyana Universe 2011 Kara Lord and reigning Miss Universe Leila Lopes crowned Guyana’s newest Queen.
