The already large Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club trophy collection got another addition when the Rose Hall Town Bakewell Under-17s defeated Albion by 74 runs to successfully defend their Memorex/Leslie Amsterdam Memorial title at the Area ‘H’ Ground on Friday.
The two-day final saw several outstanding performances from several players – Devin Baldeo, Shailendra Shameer and Arif Chan of Rose Hall Town Bakewell.
Albion won the toss and to the surprise of everyone, invited Rose Hall Town to take first strike on a wicket noted to take spin as matches’ progress. Rose Hall Town Bakewell scored 137 in their first innings led by a fine 49* (8×4) from Berbice Under-17 all-rounder Devin Baldeo.
Baldeo and No. 10 batsman Joshua Holder (16) added 52 crucial runs for the 9th wicket after coming together with their team struggling at 82 for 8. Daniel Lewis (18), Brandon Prashad (16), Vienna Gooniah (11) and Shailendra Shameer (10) were the other Rose Hall Town batsmen to reach double figures; Sharaz Ramcharran 5 for 46 from 23 overs and David Latchaya 3 for 36 from 23 overs bowled well for Albion.
Albion in reply reached 105 for 9, innings closed; Guyana Under-19 player Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai failed to turn up at the ground due to his presence with the Guyana side in Barbados. Latchaya returned with the bat to score 34 not out and received support Balchan Baldeo 18 and L. Bishram 17.
Offspinner Shailendra Shameer claimed 5 for 30 runs from 15 overs and his spin twin Arilf Chan 3 for 17.
Batting a second time with a first innings lead of 32 runs, Rose Hall Town Bakewell were bowled out for 135, the impressive Baldeo again leading with 37, Vienna Gooniah 24, Demieri Cameron 19 and Daniel Lewis 16 offering support.
Sharaz Ramcharran claimed 3 for 40, offspinner David Latchaya 3 for 60 and Balchan Baldeo 2 for 9. Motie-Kanhai was unable to bowl because of his absence on the first day. Chasing what would have been the highest score of the match to win – 168 – in a mere 3 hours of play, Albion found the offspin bowling of Shameer and Chan too difficult to handle on a turning pitch as they were bowled out for 94 in 37 overs.
Motie-Kanhai batting at No 7 top scored with a fighting 35. Latchaya made 28 while Baldeo chipped in with 15. Shameer finished with 5 for 25 to end with match figures of 10 for 55. Chan claimed 4 for 29 runs.
At the presentation ceremony Secretary of the Berbice Cricket Board Angela Haniff expressed gratitude to Mr. Tony Amerally and the Management of Memorex for their sponsorship of the tournament and for investing in the development of new talent in the Ancient County.
She congratulated both teams for their display of discipline, dedication and a high standard of play. Devin Baldeo was named Man-of-the-finals for his valuable innings of 49* and 37, he collected $10,000 and a trophy.
Albion carried home the runner up prize of $25,000 while the champion received $40,000 and the winning trophy. Winning Captain Shailendra Shameer and Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster both dedicated the championship victory to Bakewell Chairman Mr. Naeem Nasir and General Manager Mr. Rajendra Ganga.
