DEAR EDITOR,
The nation will start its census-taking next month. This involves field workers asking members of the public questions and filling out questionnaires.
I would like to know if the Bureau of Statistics (BoS) has made provisions for deaf and hard of hearing persons. Asking them to read for themselves is out of the question, as the vast majority of deaf persons are unable to read due to the shortcomings of deaf education in Guyana.
I would like to advise the BoS that it is not too late as there are Sign language interpreters available. For more information the BoS can contact the National Commission on Disability and/or The Deaf Support group on 2262880.
M. Chester
