The ownership of Guyana Times has become unclear and even confusing, according to claims contained in a writ filed in the Supreme Court in the State of New York by lawyers, Morlan Ty Rogers and Ray Beckerman, for Dr. Ranjisinghi ‘Bobby’ Ramroop.
Ramroop is seeking US$1M ($200M) from Kaieteur News by way of 11damages for alleged defamation. The writ is based on publications by Kaieteur News on the sale of pharmaceuticals and other supplies to the Guyana Government through the Ministry of Health.
In his writ, Dr. Ramroop claims that he is “financially associated with Guyana Times Inc, a corporation which publishes a newspaper in Guyana called Guyana Times”.
From the time the paper appeared on the local scene, various media outlets have tried to secure information on the ownership of the paper. Attempts to secure the records from the Deeds Registry were futile. The information was either non-existent or was so deeply buried that it was hidden from public view.
There were reports that the owner of the newspaper was former President Bharrat Jagdeo.
In fact, Jagdeo never denied ownership when a newspaper actually named him as the owner.
Now Dr. Ramroop’s claim of being “financially associated’ with the newspaper seems to suggest that he is a mere backer. It has also renewed queries about the ownership of the newspaper.
