Two death row inmates housed at the Camp Street prison have gone on a hunger strike as of yesterday morning.
The men, it is understood, are refusing their meals since they have not received medication to treat their aliments for the last six days.
Relatives of the two men said that the inmates are being given food that could cause them to have
adverse medical effects.
The inmates, Ganga Deolall, who has been imprisoned since 1993 for the infamous ‘crankshaft murder’ at La Grange, West Bank Demerara and Hafeez Hussain, who was found guilty of causing the death of Arnold Ramsammy, are claiming that they are being fed bread and butter every day, although doctors have advised that such food is unhealthy for them.
Kaieteur News was told that Deolall is a diabetic and Hussain is afflicted with high cholesterol. Apart from that, reports are that the men have not received their medication since Wednesday last. The hunger strike is to get the authorities’ attention.
The families claimed that the inmates were told that there is no medication to treat diabetes or high cholesterol at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Kaieteur News understands that the inmates have requested a meeting with Director of Prisons, Dale Erskine, but it is still unclear when this would happen.
Calls to the Director of Prisons were unanswered.
