“Since he has gone public about his conscience, if it’s a good conscience then he should offer his resignation” – Moses Nagamootoo
By Jenelle Carter
The Alliance For Change said it will be relentless in its call for the resignation of Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee as they too seek to take a no confidence motion to Parliament at the earliest possible date.
During a media briefing yesterday AFC executive member Khemraj Ramjattan said that the motion was being drafted as of noon yesterday and is was expected to have been delivered shortly after. According to Ramjattan, he is not sure what the APNU’s motion will entail but opined that it will be similar to the AFC’s.
“As to whether we are going to meet the time requirement for motions of that nature, because there are some that can be given without notice, would be a thing the speaker will have to decide as soon as that is done and we send it across to the speaker and clerk. We rather suspect we will get the communication as to whether it will be ready for tomorrow (today) or not,” Ramjattan pointed out.
He further stated that even if it’s not ready for this week’s sitting of parliament they will be even more prepared for next week.
Also speaking on the issue was AFC Parliamentarian, Moses Nagamootoo, who said the party would like to see the motion called as early as possible, but at the same time, they are not in a hurry.
“Since he has gone public about his conscience, if it’s a good conscience he should offer his resignation, he should not be called upon by the parliament to which he is accountable, he should then offer. We are waiting while we put our motion in place”.
“We know that for the record, the minister himself has detailed his preparation for the use of force, he has said even in response to statements I made at one of these press conferences that I was suffering from delusions when I said he was in a state of political nightmare”.
Nagamootoo added that the Minister was in fact in a barrack room situation, conspiring how to use force to contain situations and he caused the rehearsal to be made of the water cannon, and to be backed up by ranks with submachine guns.
“We saw that in the video and in the picture, so Mr. Rohee can’t talk about his conscience in the light of his involvement in the preparation for the use of lethal force.”
The ‘toll gates’ demonstration was again brought to the fore as Nagamootoo pointed out that given the protest by persons in that area the toll gates were demolished and withdrawn under Burnham and not a single life was lost.
“There is a comparison, that when people resist economic hardship and the imposition of economic hardship, they have a right constitutionally and as citizens to peacefully resist the hardship.”
Nagamootoo said that is why his party finds the Linden situation despicable, given that attempts are being made to isolate it and treat it as though it were a violent uprising against the state.
“This incident was just like other situation of the sugar belt, it was a justifiable and righteous movement to protect the welfare of people, and so in light of this we feel that Rohee cannot remain in the position that he holds, it would be prejudicial of any inquiry knowing that he had an intellectual role in the results that came from the unrest.”
Further the party called for all citizens to show solidarity with the Lindeners as reference was made to Lindeners giving help to sugar workers during their struggle.
