Cane juice vendor Michael Powley has been remanded to prison after being charged with murder. The charge was read to him at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
The accused made his appearance on Wednesday before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.
It is alleged that on June 8, last, at Plastic City, Vreed-en-Hoop, Powley killed 26 year-old Vishnauth Narine. The accused was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge. Powley is being represented by Attorney-at-Law Basil Williams, who was unavoidably absent from court.
The matter will be called again on August 2.
Powley was arrested on Tuesday morning after being on the run for nearly a month. On June 8, Powley and Narine were involved in a confrontation during which Powley allegedly stabbed Narine to the left of his chest.
Narine was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he died while receiving medical attention. Powley fled the scene. The incident reportedly stemmed from both men being involved in a gas bottle theft and being locked up.
