The commitment taken by executives of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) to take the sport into the rural areas is rapidly picking up pace and close on the heels of a tournament in Linden recently, chess officials are now heading to Bartica to battle for honours in the Malta Supreme One-Day Rapid Tournament, billed for tomorrow at the Bartica Secondary School.
Several of the country’s top players are scheduled to match wits and national champion, Taffin Khan is in ripping form and tipped to come out on top of the heap. In the absence of his predecessor, Wendell Muesa, Khan has had to stave off strong challenges from his dad, David, and Shiv Nandalall, who has been recently coming into his own. Tournament Director, Irshad Mohamed has also improved tremendously and may very well pose some problems for the top players.
The tournament consists of seven rounds with a junior and senior category and is sponsored by beverage moguls, Banks DIH Ltd. On Wednesday afternoon last, Malts Brand Manager, Clayton Mc Kenzie handed over a large sponsorship cheque to Secretary of the GCF, Vishnu Rampersaud in the presence of Communications Manager, Troy Peters, at the company’s Thirst Park complex. He lauded the efforts of the organizing committee of the GCF in the decentralization of the sport while reiterating that his company will continue supporting their efforts. He noted that his company
Communications Manager, Mr. Peters, issued brief remarks and pointed out that the beverage company has been established in that region for many years and has enjoyed massive support from the Barticians. As such, the company felt obliged to support the young players of that region as they hone their skills.
“We expect a highly competitive tournament under since the Malta Supreme brand, one of excellence, and is the label under which you are competing,” concluded Mr. Peters. Mr. Rampersaud expressed gratitude to the company for supporting chess and by extension the Federation’s efforts to spread the sport to all ten administrative regions. The players are battling for trophies, medals and chess sets among other lucrative prizes.
The action gets underway at 10:00hrs sharp.
