President of the Guyana Draughts Association (GDA), Jairam, led from the front and carted off the honours when the GDA staged a national draughts competition at the National Gymnasium over the past weekend.
Mark Braithwaite and Shawn Weekes emulated their President’s feat thus securing a clean sweep for the nation’s top draughts players.
The tournament got underway on Saturday with games in the B and C divisions. Braithwaite compiled 17 points to take the honours in the B category with Edgar Downer coming in second with 14 points, while Jairam ended in the third position with 11 points.
Weekes then amassed 16 points from two consecutive wins to claim the honours in the C category, by dint of which, he earned instantaneous promotion to the B category.
Troy Harris, a newcomer to the sport, scored 12 points and finished in second place, while Maurice Primo amassed 10 points to claim the third spot.
Activities concluded on Sunday when the top four players contested for the senior title. Weekes also earned a spot in the senior category after dominating the C category. Jairam, who had earlier conceded losses in the B category, proved his mettle after compiling 19 points to capture the championship trophy.
Godfrey George scored one point less than his President to occupy the second place while current national champion, Carlton Simon claimed the final podium spot after amassing a similar amount of points as George. His victory came after the tie breaker system was employed. Lindener, Floyd Cumberbatch, the coordinator of the sport in that region, secured 14 points and occupied the fourth place spot.
Meanwhile, in keeping with the projections of the executive of the GDA to increase the awareness countrywide, the next tournament will be contested in Region 3, the West Demerara area, while the players will travel to Region 10, Upper Demerara, shortly afterwards for another tournament.
