Dear Editor,
Change came to Guyana in the last months of 2011. The diverse people of that country carried their wounds, bruises and pains and hobbled into polling booths all across the land. They made the PPP/Civic a minority government.
The relentless fighters did not let up. Death threats, the indignity of faeces thrown, the dirty lock ups, the beatings and the constant vilification from the state media did not dissuade them. Neither did they falter.
They pressed on with the noble agenda of saving Guyana from the clutches of a corrupt and hegemonic few who for 20 years brought Guyana to the brink of destruction.
The winds of change blew. The people connected with the freedom fighters and opposition politicians. A unified nation became ready and said: ‘Enough’.
Parliament Building became a symbol of hope in 2012, its flag of oppression torn down and trampled under the masses’ feet.
Mark Benschop, Lincoln Lewis, Freddie Kissoon, Gehard Ramsaroop, Dr David Hinds,Karen De Souza and Nigel Hughes stayed the course in the darkest hours of our history. Joined by others, they battled peacefully and valiantly to see positive change. That baton was passed to MPs and continues in parliament, today.
Cathy Hughes, Moses Nagamootoo, Kemraj Ramjattan, David Granger and Carl Greenidge stand in battle alongside good men and women in parliament with an agenda that speaks to the interest of every Guyanese. In that House, the neck of widespread corruption neck is being broken and this is only the beginning of the restoration of a nation that will stand proud and be counted with the rest of its Caribbean neighbours.
Those who wish to call snap elections will do it at their own peril. They continue to behave as if the pie of the land is all theirs. Now they cannot have it all, they wish to go down a route where they will not have it at all. The people are ready, more ready this time.
