Stall owners located alongside the Timehri Public Road, East Bank Demerara, will have no option but to commence relocation in a few days, despite pleas for assistance from Government.
Minister of Transport & Hydraulics, Robeson Benn, confirmed this on Wednesday when he told Kaieteur News that the stall owners have been squatting on the public highway reserves for a number of years, and have been notified on several occasions that they had to move.
“These people are on reserve land and are there illegally, squatting, and they have always been given notices. With the road work being expanded in the area there are certain safety conditions that have to be met and we have had many meetings with them, and local government met with them also to explain this. They are fully informed.”
According to Benn, the expected road works will be in full swing shortly to accommodate the expansion of the thoroughfare and it is necessary that their businesses be moved to another location, which is safer.
“We are placing them in an area that is safe and not far from where they are presently. It is a covered facility with washrooms and they will be accommodated in a secure and safe area,” said Benn.
Meanwhile the stall holders said that they have no objection in the relocation process, however, they are stating that their businesses were legally established as they were given written permission from the Regional Office.
“If we were squatting we would have moved and wouldn’t have put up permanent structures and we would have agreed that we have to move. But they didn’t give we that, they gave us permanent papers and they have to give us back permanent money to build back permanent stalls,” one vendor stated.
In response to such arguments, Minister Benn emphasized that the land on which they have established vending structures is government reserve and therefore the Regional Office is not permitted allow that.
“I will repeat once more, the Regional Office has no jurisdiction over the public highway reserves.”
