Big wins for Better than Gold, Celebration Time, Storm In a tea Cup and Got to Go
By Samuel Whyte
It took a blistering run down the homestretch by little known outsider,
Awesome Warrior of the Jagdeo stable and ridden by Rupert Ramnauth, to take the feature B class 1500M event and create yet another major upset to take the $1M top money compliments of Jumbo Jet Auto Sales and the Pancham trophy, when the Port Mourant Turf Club held their annual Easter Sunday one day horserace meet at the Club’s track Corentyne, Berbice on Sunday.
It was an awesome display by Awesome Warrior in the keenly contested event. As the animals left the starting gates it was a ding dong battle as they exchanged the lead constantly, the tussle continuing right into the homestretch. It was then that Jockey Ramnauth using his vast experience and skill started to urge his charge to full throttle as it accelerated enough to edge home for the upset win ahead of Home Bush Baby, Who is On the Case and The Clever cat.
It was a day that saw the return to prominence of the Jagdeo stable with two wins to take the top stable award.
The very competitive 4 year old 1200M event saw Better that Gold of the Jagdeo stable being skillfully ridden by Ramnauth return with a bang after a long layoff to eke out a victory by a nose over Swing Easy as Sabrina’s Joy and Technology closed out the top four for the $450,000 prize and Gajnabi trophy.
The keenly contested E class 1500M event saw Got to go of the Jumbo Jet stable with Trinidadian Badre riding held on for a close win from Work Force to take the $400,000 top prize compliments of The Shariff Racing stable and Dennis DeRoop trophy. Top of the line and Face the Fire were the others that placed.
Storm in a Tea Cup of the Shariff stable saw Ramnauth again using his skills down the
homestretch to create an uproar with a driving finish to the line to blow away Windy war, Settle in Seattle and Pride and Joy in the 1200M event for Three Year old horses born and bred in Guyana and West Indies for the $390,000 money and Peter Lewis trophy.
Third World of the Noel Quinn stable and ridden by Yap Drepaul came first in the Three year old Guyana Bred 1200M gallop for its third consecutive win worth $300,000 compliments of Banks DIH Limited and the Jumbo Jet trophy ahead of Watch my Shadow and I Want Revenge.
There was much celebration for the connection of the Elcock stable as the locally bred Celebration Time ridden by Winston Apadhu was a gate to pole victor in The H class 1200M race as it carted off the $220,000 money and the Lalgit trophy. In its trail were Appealing Harvest, Face the Fire and Royal Champion.
There was a win for Apostle of the Jeenarine stable with Nascimento in the ‘I’ class 1200M event for the $190,000 and the Alim Shaw Trophy.
Silver Kid of the Asrafalli Stable and trained by Shawn Asrafalli with Jamaican Andron Findley in the saddles was too quick for its opponents as it slipped away with the $150,000 top prize and Trophy compliments of Digicel.
Jockey Rupert Ramnauth rode away with the top jockey accolade as the Jagdeo stable with Trainer Tribuwan ‘Turbo’ Jagdeo copping the top stable and trainer
award, all compliments of Trophy Stall and the organisers.
Close to 100 horses and over $5M were up for grabs.
During the day there were many incidents of indiscipline, including attacks on the media which cast a black shadow over the standard of event and only emphasized the fact that the activity needs to be better organised in Guyana.
However during the day’s proceedings Kaieteur News was lauded for its coverage of Horseracing and its recognition of Horserace magnate, Senior Counsel Marcel Crawford as a special person.
