“Another day; another million dollars but this time it’s going to Berbice
cricket development,” were the words of Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company, Allison Parker moments before Chief Finance Officer (GT&T), Royston Rachpaul handed over a cheque to the value of that amount to Secretary of the Berbice Cricket Board Angela Haniff yesterday.
The simple ceremony took place at the Telephone Company’s Hadfield Street Sports Club and was witnessed by several cricketers out of Berbice, other staff of the telephone company and media representatives.
Mr. Rachpaul expressed delight on behalf of his organization for the ability to once again render support to the players of the Ancient County.
He said that he was particularly impressed with the input of the female players even as he acknowledged the presence of two representatives of the West Indies women’s cricket team, Shemaine Campbell and Erva Giddings.
The GT&T executive complimented Mr. Hilbert Foster of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club for his efforts in the promotion of the sport in the region.
He also laid the foundation for future relations with his company and the RHY&SC in his final remarks, “I wish to encourage you to continue the good work even as my company commits to future support,” assured Mr. Rachpaul.
Mr. Foster expressed deep gratitude for the support received and intimated that $300,000 of the amount would be used for the purchase of balls for the first division clubs.
He said that the balance would be utilized in the preparation of teams in the county for on the field duties.
He also reminded media operatives that Berbice players has dominated the inter-county championships, winning a plethora of tournaments including the U-15, U-17 and U-19 senior 50 overs competition among others.
“The sponsorship derived from GT&T played a massive part in those successes as it allowed the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) to prepare the teams properly without having to worry about the requisite finances,” concluded Mr. Foster.
