The Rotary Club of Georgetown Central presented its annual Vocational Service Award to the Railway View Parent Committee of Railway View, Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, during a simple ceremony that was conducted on Thursday, at the Georgetown Club on Camp Street.
The award was presented by Dr. Claudette Harry to Shirley Smith who represented the committee.
Founded in 2010, the Railway View Literary Project is a community-based literacy project for children and adults living in the former squatting area.
The group also runs a free community-based library (The Mirriam Wheeler Community Library), a small computer programme and other activities that are meant to foster development and community empowerment.
Approximately 60 children and 15 adults benefit from the services of the group.
The Parent Committee is made up of parents of children in the classes. They have come together to make a difference in the lives of their children and their community.
