All preparations have been complete and all is set for today’s third running of the Desmond Dorsette Memorial Road Race dubbed the Desmond Dorsette Classic Run from 9:00 this morning.
The event is organised and sponsored by the Dorsette Family of No 50 Village, Upper Corentyne and a few of his former colleagues, friends and well wishers. The event will be help in three categories and is open to athletes throughout Berbice. The categories are U 19 athletes, U13 participants and females.
The U19 athletes will cover a distance of Four miles, beginning their journey at No47 village and is expected to finish at the popular No53 Sports Complex Corentyne, while the U13 and the females will begin at No 49 village and also finish at the No 53 Complex.
According to information from the organisers, close to 30 persons have registered for the event so far, with athletes from various parts of Berbice down to take part.
Attractive prizes which will include cash incentives, trophies and T Shirts will be presented to the first four finishers in each category. Certificates of appreciation and participation will also be presented to all participants by the Dorsette family. This is the third year for the event which began in 2009, it was not held last year (2011) due to various reasons.
For the first time a fund day will be held after the event at the No 53 Sports Complex beginning at 10:00 hrs. Among activities planned for the day are Softball cricket, Volleyball, Football, Dominoes and a number of Novelty events including Egg and Spoon, Three legged race, Sack race, Needle and Thread, Sal Pass, coconut peeling race, among others while a number of Ring games are also expected to be played.
The late Superintendent Dorsette was an ardent sports fan who participated in numerous sporting activities including Cricket and athletics during his active years in the Guyana Police Force and in the community. A native of East Canje, Dorsette migrated after retiring and would return with his family from time to time to do charity and community work.
The activity is being spearheaded by his wife Waveney Dorsette, who is a retired Head Mistress, and community activist and also a re-migrant. (Samuel Whyte)
