Mar 23, 2012 Letters
DEAR EDITOR,
It was with great amusement and a tinge of disgust that I read Clement Rohee’s Letter; “Whatever happened to balanced and objective reporting?” KN 3/22/2012; After Mr. Rohee’s government has subjected us (the Guyanese people) to a lopsided PPP propaganda machine for twenty years; he dares to lecture the two daily independents?
I would like to ask Mr. Rohee and his party the PPP/C the same question; “Whatever happened to balanced and objective reporting?”
I am sure the people of Region 10 who are subjected to only NCN would like to ask Mr. Rohee and the PPP/C government the same question. The taxpayers of Guyana, who subsidize the daily Chronicle – the most unbalanced and biased periodical in Guyana – would like to ask Mr. Rohee about the lack of balance and objectivity in its pages.
Just for the education of Clement Rohee, independent newspapers are intended to be independent. Their journalistic slant is decided by the Publisher and the Editorial board. Their only responsibility is to truth in reporting and not to be supportive or write favourably about a government in power. Newspapers are a dying business and those that want to survive must remain relevant and competitive. It is apparent by Mr. Rohee’s missive that he is peeved that he and the Police are not getting the type of press he desires from the two independent dailies.
I would offer the Minister some unsolicited advice; look in the mirror. Over the past year the Home Affairs Ministry and the Guyana Police Force have been rocked by scandal after scandal.
What we have is a ministry and an arm of the government in crisis, and a leader who is either out of his depth or spiraling out of control. Mr. Rohee’s recent flurry of letters to the Editor suggests that he has lost confidence in his Public Relations team and has resorted to self-defence. This however is not a very good tactic, because it shows a measure of desperation and weakness.
The Home Affairs Minister should not be overly concerned about the gullibility of the public, but should instead spend more time ensuring that we are a safe.
Citizens interact with the Police Force and the government bureaucracy everyday; they form their own opinions based on those interactions whether they be negative or positive.
I would like to remind Mr. Clement Rohee that were it not for Kaieteur News, we the “gullible” would have been ignorant about the Airport expansion deal; the Amaila Falls Hydro power/Fip Motilall scandal; the India land deal; and many of the shady and secret contracts signed by the previous government.
It is interesting and somewhat disingenuous that Clement Rohee feels that he has the moral authority to lecture the independents on being fair and balanced. Mr. Rohee, there is an old saying; “those who live in glass houses should not throw stones” or as it is written in the book of Matthew; “First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see more clearly how to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye.”
