Marketing Executive of Banks DIH Ltd Carlton Joao was presented with copies
of audited financial reports for the year 2011 and the Banks Beer Football Festival from Treasurer of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Dexter Schultz, during a simple ceremony which was conducted in the Boardroom of the beverage giants yesterday.
Also, in attendance were Outdoor Events Manager Mortimer Stewart and GFA President Lt. Commander Vernon Burnett and they all agreed that the act was one that, though, it is not unique is highly uncommon, especially from the Association which has enjoyed a long term relationship with the Company, but has not done a similar deed for over ten years.
The Company apart from being one of the principal supporters of sport across Guyana is also one of the leading donors in local football.
Joao, who received the copies on behalf of the sponsor, noted that a standard needed to be set so that there could be verified accountability for sponsor and stakeholder funds invested in the various large scale promotions that are held.
He added that the submission of such information could help validate and verify the funds that sponsors and stakeholders invest and the move by the GFA is a good one.
Asked whether the act is an encouraging sign for future support from the Company, Joao responded in the positive, adding that transparency and accountability lends to stakeholder comfort when investing funds in any venture.
Pressed to respond to whether the Company will now use this new development as a gauge for assisting other associations down the road, Joao, while acknowledging that he anticipated the question said he wishes all other associations and organizations follow the GFA’s lead, stating that, “ it’s an inevitable best step forward in ensuring the ‘best’ use of sponsorship funds.”
Burnett in his remarks told this newspaper that the move is in keeping with good practices and proper accountability, a feature that they are hoping will catch on with the clubs affiliated with the GFA.
“We would like to be transparent at all times and by this I mean letting the sponsors and stakeholders know what we are doing with their monies we receive from them and also the funds we garner from hosting our competitions,” Burnett informed.
According to the GFA President, the reports are also to be used as a guide for the GFA in its forward planning, while it could also work as a channel for the clubs to follow suit and according to him, they wanted to lead in this direction.
