Meanwhile, Coordinator Lennox Arthur has disclosed that several sponsors have come on board and while he is pleased with the response received, he is still looking forward for a few more and those who have made pledges to ensure a successful tournament. He informed that some key sponsors have acquiesced to covering the main prizes on offer. Banks DIH is the sponsor of the $500,000 first prize with Digicel covering the $250,000 second prize, Beepat and Sons has donated the $150,000 third prize and Busta will take care of the $100,000 fourth prize.
Other key sponsors on board include MACORP, John Fernandes, Nazar Mohamed of Mohamed’s Enterprise of Lombard Street, CIDI, General Equipment Guyana Ltd, New Thriving Restaurant, Sterling Products and Courtney Benn Construction.
The opening salvo of games will produce much excitement as several seasoned and fringe players battle for the attractive prizes on offer. Among those on show include Llyton Ramsey of Mocha, Nedd Fraser of West Ruimveldt, Orlando Gilgeous representing Campbellville and Kitty’s Terrence Lewis.
Meanwhile, this is the 31st edition of the tournament which began in 1981, when a small gathering of friends conceived the idea of celebrating the birth anniversary of Hamilton Green in a special way.
Mr. Lennox Arthur, one of those persons and a close friend of Mr. Green was then the Coach, of one of the leading football teams in Georgetown, namely Pele FC and also the coach of the Guyana National Football team.
Arthur immediately went about organising a football programme for teams in Georgetown in Mr. Green’s honour, who at the time was Vice President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and also Deputy Prime Minister.
With the assistance of a small committee the programme was a success. This birth anniversary celebration continued almost every year thereafter with stronger support.
In 1995, with Mr. Green now Mayor of Georgetown, the birthday celebration was re-initiated with the tournament being named “The Mayor’s Cup”.
Over the years this tournament has developed into an annual event and is on the yearly calendar of the Guyana Football Federation and is supported by all the sub-associations affiliated to the GFF.
Tournament winners over the years include such teams as Thomas United, Victoria Kings, Pele, Fruta Conquerors, GDF, Camptown, Western Tigers and Alpha United.
Additionally on a number of occasions on the completion of the tournament a representative Mayor’s All Star team were selected and has visited countries such as Suriname, Barbados and Cuba to oppose teams in friendly internationals.
The Mayor’s All Stars teams returned creditable performances.
