Relatives have recovered the body of 48-year-old fisherman Ruben Yarde, who disappeared in the
Aruka River, in Mabaruma, last week Saturday.
The victim’s brother, Rudolph Yarde, told Kaieteur News that his sibling’s remains were found on Wednesday afternoon under a dilapidated wharf in Mabaruma.
He was laid to rest in the community yesterday, following a postmortem, which confirmed that he died from drowning.
Rudolph Yarde said that at first, the search party had scoured other parts of the river, since they were convinced that the powerful tides had carried the body far away from where the fisherman went down.
However, Yarde’s brother said that he dreamt on Tuesday that his missing sibling was trapped under the old wharf. On Wednesday, he persuaded the search party to focus their attention at that spot.
A dragline operator lifted part of the collapsed structure and exposed the fisherman’s submerged body.
Yarde was a crew member of the fishing vessel ‘Lynnia’, which moored at the Kumaka wharf at around 12:30 hrs two Saturdays ago.
According to reports, two other crewmen were swimming in the river when Yarde, who could not swim, plunged into the water to take a bath.
However, the water was high at the time and the father of two was swept away by the strong current.
Sources said that the tide was ‘falling’ at the time, and on these occasions the current is extremely strong.
Yarde is survived by two children, aged 28 and 24 and two grandchildren
Rudolph Yarde yesterday lauded Region One Chairman Paul Pierre, who provided the services of the dragline operator, and assisted the family in having a coffin made. He also thanked resident Peter Mendonca who assisted in the search and two female shopkeepers who provided the search party with meals and refreshments free of cost.
