Under 16 Davis and Fed Cups in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic later this month received a timely boost from corporate giant Ansa McAl who came on board as a co-sponsor of the team uniforms.
Through its Smalta product Brand Representative Anjeta Hinds speaking at the presentation ceremony recently said “It’s always a pleasure to assist with a positive venture in Guyana that helps young people develop their talent and it is the hope that the event is well received and Smalta will continue to lend support in any way possible.”
The seven-member team will depart Guyana on March 17th to compete in the qualifying events which will attract the best players from North/ Central America & Caribbean.
The 3-member Boy’s team will comprise Daniel Lopes, Gavin Lewis and Khalif Gobin who have been dominant on the local junior circuit as well as holding their own in the senior categories over the last year.
Lopes and Lewis are ranked number 6 and 7 respectively in the Men’s division locally based on their performances in competitions over the past year.
The girl’s team will comprise 14 year-old Aretta Dey, who won the under 14 ITF championship in St Vincent in 2011 and the first runner up Nicola Ramdyhan.
The pair had completed a double gold medal performance for Guyana in that tournament when they teamed up to capture the ITF under 14 doubles title as well.
Preparation of the team has been ongoing over the last two months under ITF Level 2 coach Shelly Ramdyhan and ITF Level 1 coach Jeremy Miller who will both accompany the team to the week long tournament which culminates on March 24th.
The team also underwent training with Regional ITF Officer and coach Antony Jeremiah over the weekend at the GBTI Recreational Centre.
The level of competition is expected to be very high as many of the game’s all-time greats have played in the competition in the past before progressing into the senior ranks
