Stella Maris Primary School has been broken into yet again. Burglars reportedly made good their escape with $7,000 in cash and electrical appliances, including an electric kettle and a microwave, from the school’s canteen. However, the operator of the canteen opined that the school is at a bigger loss since the guard service responsible for the compound’s security is “a waste of time and money”.
The burglary is believed to have occurred sometime around 10 pm on Friday.
The guards claimed that they did not hear any unusual noise, but after discovering the canteen ransacked, they summoned the police.
While police investigations are ongoing, Shanna Singh, who runs the canteen, told Kaieteur News that it is impossible for the guards to not have heard the canteen being broken into.
“So much things break and damage and they (the guards) didn’t hear anything. It was just around 10 o’ clock. Is not like they de sleeping that early,” the woman said.
She further lamented that she was informed of the robbery in the afternoon hours of the following day, after showing up at the school for a committee meeting.
“They wait till de afternoon of the next day (Saturday) to tell we. And is not like they call we, we had to go to school, that’s how we know,” the woman said.
Meanwhile, Singh and her husband are of the opinion that the guard service hired by the Ministry of Education is “cheap and unprofessional”.
“They don’t even have uniforms. And the guards does be drinking rum in the school on weekends,” Singh alleged.
The woman noted that this is the fourth burglary they have suffered in a few months, and she vowed that it will no longer continue since the ministry “will have to take action”.
“This can’t continue. They got to do something. It is not fair for us to suffer these losses.”
