Tevin Garraway, Stephan James, Chavez Ageday and Davin Fraser qualified easily yesterday afternoon at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary, Kingston, when the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) hosted their CARIFTA Games Trails which was postponed due to inclement weather. The Games will be hosted in Bermuda from April 7-9.
Garraway of Police Progressive Youth Club (PPYC) who was in a dominant mood, bolted to victory in the boys’ Under 17 100m finals in an impressive 10.8 seconds ahead of his opponents.
He missed his chance of qualifying in the 200m (22.3 seconds) but took charge of the bend and never looked threaten on the homestretch finishing ahead of the Shaquille Smart who clocked 22.6 seconds.
Leading sprinters Stephan James and Chavez Ageday charged their opponents in the under 20 200m and 100m respectively. Ageday attained both 100m and 200m standards while James attained the 200m standards.
Ageday who emerged as a double qualifier took an easy win the junior 100m clocking 10.3 seconds; Fraser also qualified in timings of 10.4 seconds which allowed him to be second to Ageday.
The 200m was more of an upset to Ageday who thought he had everything in control as he powered off the turns, but his thought was soon dimmed when quarter-miler, James, displayed his finishing strength to win in 21.3 seconds, Ageday finished second in 21.5 seconds. Royals Youth Movement athlete, Elton Bollers who attends the University of Guyana, missed the standard after finishing third in 21.6 seconds.
In the 400m, James registered 49.5 seconds which was not up to standard with the AAG qualifying time.
Coming close to the AAG CARIFTA marks were Leticia Myles, Tiffany Carto (U-20) and Tirono Mitchelle (U-17) in the sprint (100m and 200m).
Myles and Carto, who ran the junior category, battled fiercely to reach the mark but were unfortunate in both sprint doubles.
Double winner Myles clocked 12.00 seconds and 24.9 seconds in the 100m and 200m. Carto who stated that she had a horrific start in the 200m clocked 25 flat after generating her speed on the straights.
Mitchelle also came close to the mark in the 100m dash, but was 1 second off the AAG standard. Mitchelle clocked 12.1 seconds.
