– Medhi Ramdhani and Robert Fernandes to battle today in open category final
After entering the tournament with the most handicaps (-25), Jason Khalil, who a spectator described as Guyana’s future star, won a rigorous match against Ben Mekdeci yesterday afternoon at the Georgetown Club, Camp Street, when the Bounty Farm Limited Handicap Squash Tournament (HST) finals got underway.
National junior player Khalil, who took a break from the game since December, stated that he felt good of himself after winning the finals against his opponent and declared that the win will also encourage him to perform better in the sport, “With the biggest handicap of the tournament and still being able to make the plate, it makes me feel good of myself,” he said.
Khalil’s 15/10, 15/9 win displayed his strength as a National player although he was nervous during the first half of the game, “Yes, I was nervous, that was because my handicaps were bigger and the biggest in the tournament, so the pressure load was much heavier for me.”
Despite being nervous he was able to control his emotions to claim the first set.
Questioning the player about his second half of the game, he stated that it was there when he played more consistent. “I played more consistent in the second set. I already knew that I put the hard work in on the first half so I just relaxed and played and I eventually earned my victory.”
Alyssa Xavier defeated Joven Benn in the third place battle in the plate by winning both sets 15/8 and 15/8.
Alexandra Phang (+11) who entered with a smaller amount of handicaps than Haopei Yang (+20), fought for her third place win in the A category. Yang and Phang fought a neck to neck point game, with Phang winning 15/12 and 15/11.
The A category final saw Alec Melville (-10) and Andrew Peroune beginning with the same handicaps, however Melville eventually pulled away winning the battle (15/5, 16/17, 15/9).
In the A Category Plate finals, Justin Gomes was crowned king, beating Samantha Fernandes who gave him stern opposition, winning the second set to force a closely fought decider.
Gomes won 15/10, 17/14/, 15/10.
The third place playoff concluded with Travis Whitehead (17/15, 15/13) conquering Lucas Jonas. The first half of the game between the two was aggressive as both players tried to win the first set, but Whitehead came back after Jonas earned the match ball and leveled the score of 15 before scoring two more points to win the first set. Jonas tried to claim the second but was unsuccessful with Whitehead winning 15/13.
The final game for the day concluded with the third place play off in the Open Category with Joshua Abdool (15/10, 13/15, 15/11) overcoming Ryan Rahaman. Simply applying pressure on his opponent, Abdool was able to walk out of the squash court as the third place winner after a hard fought victory.
Special prizes were given to Whitehead for the most promising player and Mekdeci for the most improved player.
The finals for the Bounty Farm Ltd. HST 2012 Open Category will be contested today at the Georgetown Club with Ramdhani and Fernandes battling at 7pm. (Juanita Hooper)
