The heavy rainfall experienced on Wednesday has caused many farmers in
Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) to suffer huge losses to their cash crops, but some say that irregular opening of the koker in the area, contributed to flooding of their lands.
They said that persons responsible for manning the koker failed to open it in a timely manner when the rains came.
Alliance for Change (AFC) Councillor of Region Three, Harry Narine Deokinanan, told Kaieteur News that despite the excellent drainage and irrigation system which the area has, the delay in the koker being opened was the cause of the flooding on this occasion.
“We have a wonderful drainage system but the rain was too much and the system to open the koker in time failed. The water was so high that it even reached knee height for many persons.
I had called the Regional Chairman the morning. He responded and the koker was open about two hours later but truly we have no proper opening and closing of the koker,” said Deokinanan.
Deokinanan stated that in a discussion with Kapildeo Ramdehol, Chairman of the
farmers group in Parika Backdam, the problem highlighted was that the region seemed not to have a proper system in place for the operation of the koker.
“The farmers are now seeking assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture, not financial but in the form of seeds, chemicals, fertilizers and such so they can replant what they have lost. There are over 70 farmers in the area and they have all been affected by the flooding to the extent that they are left with hardly anything,” added Deokinanan.
