…remanded to prison
Samuel Cornelius the youngster accused of stabbing schoolboy Anfernee Bowman to death
last Monday was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with murder.
The 17-year-old made his first appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Cornelius who turned himself in to police on Wednesday was represented by attorney at law Mark Waldron. The police are alleging that on Monday 27 at Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt, the teen caused the death of Anfernee Bowman. He was not required to plead to the charge.
Yesterday’s hearing was held in-camera and the matter was subsequently transferred to Court Two before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell who ordered that the youngster return to court on March 21.
The police are alleging that on Monday last, the deceased, Anfernee Bowman and the accused had left their regular evening Mathematics class when they became involved in an argument. A scuffle occurred, during which Bowman allegedly received several puncture wounds to his upper body, two of which penetrated his heart. He was later pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
The accused reportedly fled the scene and went into hiding. He later turned himself into the police station where the murder allegation was put to him. The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the local school community.
The court hearing caught everyone off guard since most persons at the court were unaware that the teen in the lock-ups was Monday’s alleged killer.
He appeared nervous although his mother was present at the court, while the father of the deceased also showed up.
Despite his age, Cornelius is being held at the Camp Street Prison.
