While everyone was ‘Mashing” in New Amsterdam on Sunday, bandits took
advantage and broke into Sunset Restaurant and Bar at Cumberland Village sometime during the day.
According to owner, Frampton Mangal, he and his family had left the bar at 11:00 hrs to go to New Amsterdam for a barbeque and the usual Mash celebrations. However, all the good feelings evaporated when, upon returning home in the evening, he discovered the back door wide open. “We come back around 23:00 hrs…and the back door– they break all two of the double door, come in and fetch out the music sets and other valuable items,” the businessman said.
The thieves were not finished. They went in the upper flat of the building “and carry away CDN $400; US $200 and $190,000 and over $1M in jewelry”.
The police were called and “youngsters” were detained.
“…but one of them neighbours see what was going on but they do not want to give a written statement; they don’t want to get involved.”
The two were picked up right in the area on Monday. According to Mangal, “one of these boys was involved in a robbery couple months ago…he only come out (of jail) two weeks now.”
