In erasing any doubts, the President of Guyana’s top football club, Alpha United, Odinga Lumumba, in company of the club’s Vice President, Steve Ninvalle and Coach, Wayne Dover, updated the media in a short briefing on their withdrawal from the NaMilCo Football Festival which is sanctioned by the Georgetown Football Association (GFA).
The Alpha President maintained the stance of his club not being a part of the GFA, which refuses to follow its own mandate (seeking for the lawyers of both parties GFA and Guyana Football Federation (GFF) to meet to settle the disagreement) and seems bent on fighting and rather not resolving matters.
Lumumba said that the two parties, GFF and GFA, “Need to meet” to resolve the disagreement which is disabling football unity in the country. He believes that the disagreement between the two parties has led to a number of controversies and incidents as it relates to the game of football in Guyana.
The genesis of these differences is the fact of the GFA having an election which was approved and supervised by the GFF but not accepted by Western Tigers (WT). Lumumba stated that WT objection to the election was because of the short notice, which the club felt was inadequate for the other clubs.
He went on by saying that the GFF stated that the GFA do not need any changes to their constitution since it is properly organised, “The executives of the GFA were elected unanimously, initially the GFF said that the GFA was properly constituted and did not need any other elections, later on they changed their minds and ordered a new election for the GFA.”
Continuing his club withdrawal reasons, he added that the GFA decided to challenge the ruling of the GFF and prior to the GFF holding their annual general meeting, a court order was given with an injunction blocking the elections from the GFA. Lumumba further stated that the disagreement which is taking a slothful process in resolution will cost the country, resulting in Guyana being banned from International football from the world body (FIFA).
Lumumba also declared that the withdrawal from the NaMilCo Football Festival would cause a bad taste on some of the football fans and that was a result of receiving a letter from the GFF last Wednesday which stated that they were accepted to be affiliated with the Federation, “On last Wednesday morning I received a letter from the GFF stating that Alpha United can become again a part with the GFF and to participate in football under the directive and blessings of the GFF. I then said because you give me the letter on Wednesday I cannot withdraw from that tournament (NaMilCo Football Festival) at that point of time because we must give the clubs and sponsors at least minimum 24 hours of notice so that they came make adjustments.”
In closing the President clearly disclosed that he has no interest in being the permanent President or Executive member of the GFA, “I will continue to support the GFA when they are on fold with the GFF, at this point of time we have about six players on the national team (Golden Jaguars) and we have to support them and Guyana.
I believe it’s unpatriotic at this point of time for anyone who for any narrow reason or personal reason does not want to bring the confusion and disunity of football to an end.”
