…injured victim still critical
By Leon Suseran
The families of the two young men involved in the gruesome crash at Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, on
Sunday night are still trying to come to grips with the realities created by the event.
Quadeer ‘Quad’ Arakhan, 28 ,died on the spot while heading north along the Crabwood Creek Public Road, in his Honda Civic (PKK 1056) around 21:00 hrs on Sunday, while his best friend, 19-year-old Avinash Persaud is still battling for life at the Georgetown Hospital.
Eyewitnesses told this newspaper that the car first struck a culvert, (Blackwater Culvert) before slamming into a fence owned by businessman HN Sugrim.
Although one of the car doors was ripped off by the fence, the vehicle ended up several yards away, hitting a truck and spinning around before coming to a halt.
By the time rescuers rushed to the scene, Arkhan was already dead and they had to use ingenious means to free the badly injured Persaud in order to rush him to the nearby Skeldon Hospital and later N/A, after which he was transferred to the Georgetown Hospital at 02:00 hrs.
Arakhan’s father, businessman Daniff, was in tears sitting on the floor of their Lot 12 Springlands, Corriverton home next to the boy’s mother, Omadevi Ramrattan, yesterday, and related the last few minutes before and after their boy left home.
He left around 19:30 hrs along with his older brother, Tariq, 30, who resides at Eccles. Tariq had his own vehicle.
“Next thing you know, 21:00 hrs, we get a phone call (from a neighbour)”, the father related. He stated that the person informed them about the accident. He then dialed Tariq’s number, “and I asked him where he was and he said he was on his way to G/T and was at #51 Village right now”. He then enquired about the younger boy and Tariq related that he “had left him at a gas station”.
Upon dialing Quadeer’s number, the voicemail came on. They then suspected something horrible had happened.
The man and his wife went to the Skeldon Hospital but the body had not yet arrived. The nurses then told them that the boy had died at
Crabwood Creek. He was then taken to the scene and described what he saw.
“My son lie on the ground, and oh Allah, my son damage up and I used the word, I said Oh Allah, from Allah you came and to Allah you returned, give me faith that I want to take care of my son, to take him to the mortuary, give me courage”, he said while breaking down in tears.
“I begged the officer to please give me a note that I want to take my son to the mortuary and want to get my son tidied up as a Muslim—as soon as possible”, he related. “The officer agreed”. “And I took my hands and lift my son and load him up in the vehicle and I said Allah, give me courage to do that—you already took my son away! And I took him to the hospital”, he noted.
Quadeer, a jeweller at the Number 78 Market, leaves to mourn his wife of six years, Bibi Razya and 2 children: Arrianna, 5, and 8-month- old Areesa. His wife was crying throughout the interview with her father-in-law. “I feel bad, I get two children…my husband was very helpful,”she said while weeping. “ He last words to me was that he going out with he brother…and he never come back.”
The mangled Honda Civic is in the compound of the Springlands Police Station while the Skeldon Estate truck that was hit by the car is still on the Crabwood Creek road.
According to the injured man’s uncle, Surendra Shivpersaud, “he catch himself a bit but he is not aware of where he was and wants to run out the place. They give him sedatives. They scan him today on the brain, but it has to go to New York for results. Otherwise to that, he right hand fracture and he had neck injuries and a dislocated jaw”.
