Football fans are in for their regular treat when the annual Mayor’s Cup Football championships get underway from Friday March16 and culminates on Sunday April 8 next.
Organizer of the event, Lennox Arthur assures that the action this year would be riveting since the format has undergone changes for a more exciting competition.
Whereas in the past the various clubs battled for honours, teams would be drawn from various communities. Mr. Arthur said that the idea is to encourage a wider pool of teams even as the sport is taken to the communities.
He said that the tournament is an invitational one and despite the change in format, shall retain its original name, the Mayor’s Cup. He further stated teams are not required to pay an entrance fee.
The tournament will be played on a knock out basis and the winning team carts off over $500,000 while the runners-up win $250,000. The third and fourth prizes are $150,000 and $100,000 respectively.
Wards will be allowed to register twenty two players and the organizers said that they are employing rigid disciplinary criteria.
As such, only eighteen players and two officials will be allowed free entry to the ground whenever their teams are playing. Further, wards will be allowed a maximum of twenty two players.
