Former member and judge of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Mohan Persaud has passed
away and the boxing community is much the poorer for the loss.
Mr. Persaud drew his last breath on February 14 last after enduring a period of illness. Former Secretary of the GBBC, Trevor Arno, who once resided next door to Mr. Persaud is saddened by the passing and has extended his personal sympathy and that of the GBBC to the grieving relatives and friends of the boxing stalwart.
Reminiscing on the contribution of Mr. Persaud, Arno said that he loved boxing dearly and was always willing to discuss ways of improving the lot of local boxers through the implementation of various initiatives. “We were also very good friend and would often engage in ‘over the fence’ gaffs during our spare time,” said Mr. Arno.
Mr. Arno said that he is deeply grieved by Mr. Persaud’s death as apart from being a boxing colleague the former boxing official was a personal friend.
Mr. Persaud launched his career as a judge in May 1991 and several months later, in January 1992, became a member of the GBBC. In July 2008, after officiating in 141 bouts, Mr. Persaud retired from the job but remained very close to boxing activities. The veteran official also served as a Vice President of the GBBC and only last year received fitting commendation for his years of service at a specially arranged award ceremony planned by the president and executives of the GBBC at the Georgetown Club.
“Boxing would be much the poorer for this loss and on my behalf and that of my family and the executive of the GBBC, I wish to convey my deepest sympathy to his family and all those affected by his passing,” said Mr. Arno.
Was Jagdeo honest when he made those promises?
